Severe Gear is formulated with extra-heavy treatments of additives and shear-stable, heavy synthetic base oils for high film strength. It cushions metal surfaces and absorbs the impact of moving parts while proprietary extreme-pressure additives form an iron-sulfide barrier on gear surfaces for the ultimate line of defense against wear, pitting and scoring.

Severe Gear doesn’t contain the irregularly sized and shaped molecules inherent to conventional oils. As a result, it provides excellent fluidity despite its high viscosity to quickly reach gears and bearings at startup. Its superior fluidity also reduces viscous drag and energy loss, helping drivers put maximum power to the ground.

Severe Gear is specifically engineered for high-horsepower, high-torque conditions where centrifugal gear lube sling-off is encountered. This tenacious formulation clings to gears and bearings for maximum protection during shock loading, high G-forces and where pinion gears are installed at steep angles. Service Life

AMSOIL Severe Gear EP Synthetic Racing Gear Lube is intended for severe racing and other applications where extended drain intervals are not beneficial. AMSOIL recommends changing the lubricant as conditions dictate. Where extended drain intervals are desired, AMSOIL recommends monitoring by oil analysis.

Compatibility

AMSOIL Severe Gear EP Synthetic Racing Gear Lube is compatible with synthetic and conventional automotive gear oils. Mixing AMSOIL gear oil with other oils, however, will shorten the oil life expectancy and reduce the performance benefits.

Aftermarket oil additives, other than those specified by AMSOIL, are not recommended for use with AMSOIL gear oil.

Applications

Use in hypoid gear differentials and other applications that require a high-viscosity API GL-5 gear lube, including off-road trucks, rock racers, rock crawlers, pulling tractors, funny cars, dragsters, heavy-duty trucks and equipment where increased lubricant film is necessary. Where limited-slip performance is required, use AMSOIL Slip Lock® limited-slip additive.

Unlike its mineral oil counterparts, AMSOIL Synthetic Manual Synchromesh Transmission Fluid prevents the thinning effects of mechanical shear for stable viscosity, superior film strength and excellent anti-wear performance. It protects against corrosion, keeps seals soft for long life, and is compatible with brass synchros for smooth synchromesh shift quality.

Synthetic Manual Transmission & Transaxle Gear Lube is shear-stable and maintains its viscosity despite rigorous mechanical action. It provides a thick lubricating film and contains extreme-pressure additives to protect against wear in severe service and shock-loading conditions common when towing or hauling. It resists thermal degradation and oxidation for excellent performance in high-temperature applications, such as the New Venture NV-4500 transmission, which retains heat due to its cast-iron housing and is often subject to increased torque from turbodiesel engines.

Service Life

Under normal operating conditions AMSOIL Synthetic Manual Transmission & Transaxle Gear Lube last two times longer than conventional petroleum GL-4 gear oils. Where the original equipment manufacturer (OEM) recommends synthetic oils, follow the OEM drain interval (such as NV-4500).

Ultimate Cold-Weather Protection

Some gear lubes fail to meet basic low-temperature requirements. Mobil 1 75W-140 Gear Oil, for example, failed to meet the requirements of the industry standards, AMSOIL SEVERE GEAR®, on the other hand, delivers 20% more cold-temperature protection than the standard requires. It delivers better cold-temperature protection than Mobil 1 and Valvoline SynPower.

When making a turn, the outer wheels of a vehicle must travel faster than the inner wheels. It is up to the differential to act as a balance arm, establishing constant equilibrium of torques and forces between the left-hand and right-hand driven wheels. In standard (or open) differentials, power is directed to the wheel offering the least resistance. This works well when making a turn, but in a situation where one wheel is lifted off the ground, it causes the suspended wheel to turn while the other remains motionless.

Limited-slip (or positraction) and locking differentials are traction-increasing devices. Locking differentials transfer all available torque to both wheels. The teeth of the spider assembly engage with those on the locker clutch, causing both axle shafts to operate as one. Locking differentials don’t allow one drive wheel to spin while the other remains stationary. Instead, they keep both wheels in drive mode, but unlock to permit different wheel speeds when turning. The engaging and disengaging of the teeth on automatic locking differentials often causes a banging and clunking sound. Manual locking differentials usually use an electric motor or vacuum diaphragm to engage the locker, reducing this noise.

Limited-slip differentials allow different wheel speeds when turning, but when one wheel loses traction, greater torque is transferred to the wheel offering more resistance. Limited-slip differentials make use of friction between clutch plates, as opposed to the meshing teeth employed by locking differentials. Transferring less torque per side, limited-slip differentials are generally smoother and quieter than locking differentials, but still sometimes “chatter” when transferring torque to the wheel with traction.

In some differential applications, a friction modifier additive is necessary to reduce chatter. AMSOIL Slip Lock Differential Additive is formulated with advanced friction modifiers and is designed to eliminate gear-housing chatter in cars, trucks and SUVs equipped with limited-slip, positraction and locking differentials. It also reduces the banging and clunking associated with automatic locking differentials.

AMSOIL Slip Lock Differential Additive is formulated for use with both synthetic and petroleum gear lubricants and safely replaces manufacturer recommended friction modifiers. Its convenient flip-top dispenser provides quick and easy application to the gear housing. One four-ounce bottle of Slip Lock treats differential capacities of two to four quarts. It is not for use in automatic transmissions or other applications requiring ATF.

NOTE: AMSOIL Synthetic Gear Lubes do not require the use of this additive. However, not all differentials respond the same and if chatter is noticed, the addition of AMSOIL Slip Lock will eliminate it. For chattering differentials not running AMSOIL Gear Lube, this product is an excellent solution to the problem.

For product service life in differentials, consult your owner’s manual or the Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) to establish the application, NORMAL or SEVERE.

For product service life in non-differential applications, consult owner’s manual or the OEM for either normal or severe synthetic oil service intervals. Where service intervals are unavailable, drain at twice the interval for conventional oil.

Gear oils should be changed more frequently when operating vehicles or equipment in dusty or dirty conditions unless the gear system is properly sealed and equipped with membrane type breathers.

Note: AMSOIL does not support extended drain intervals where water contamination occurs. Check and service the gear oil frequently when water contamination is possible.

Recommended for use in differentials, manual transmissions and other gear applications requiring any of the following specifications: API GL-5, MT-1, MIL-PRF-2105E, Dana SHAES 234 (Formerly Eaton PS-037), Mack GO-J, or the differential (hypoid) gear oil specifications from all domestic and foreign manufacturers such as GM, Ford and Daimler Chrysler. Can also be used in axles where an API GL-4 lubricant is recommended.

AMSOIL SEVERE GEAR® (75W-90) provides superior performance and replaces competitors’ 75W-90 and 80W-90 gear oils. It delivers the best fuel efficiency and cold temperature performance of the SEVERE GEAR oils.

AMSOIL SEVERE GEAR® is compatible with conventional and synthetic gear oils. Mixing AMSOIL gear oils with other oils, however, will shorten the oil life expectancy and reduce the performance benefits.
